This article refers to Admiral Crius Ares, Alban commander for The Imperium. For Ares, God of War and character from the Never-ending Story, go here.

Admiral Crius Ares is a militaristic man of Alban heritage and dedicated to military affairs and rule through strength and fear. He is incorruptible in many ways, unswayed by promises of money or power. He only believes in his own power and where that will take him. He is an Admiral for The Imperium and one of Skrai's most respected officers. After Brittannia took control of the Dream Space Station, Crius Ares came in to take command of the station and run it as a military hub. He kept many of the former officers captive, aiming to either barter them with their homeworlds or use their probable deaths as influence over any rebellions in their names. However the plan backfired and the prisoners escaped and an enemy fleet warped in to attack the station. He is closely associated with Termitan, another admiral of The Imperium. Ares himself was once a man of The Kingdom of Albany, but was amongst those captured by The Imperium and forced into service. Despite this past, Ares has taken pride in his role and service and remains loyal to the last.

Characteristics

Personality

Crius Ares was always militaristic in nature, however being part of the somewhat 'primitive' Kingdom of Albany his military skills were much more primal and blunt with a killer instinct rather than knowledge. Since his enlisting into The Imperium Ares built up a vast knowledge of military tactics, assets, directives and information, as well as knowledge on governing and ruling. He is still direct and blunt in many ways, however, disliking the political facets of his positions. He prefers to see actions rewarded and misdeeds punished without taking into consideration all of the political nonsense that would otherwise come into play. In many respects it is this quality that Skrai himself appreciated in his sub-ordinate. Since Skrai's passing, politics have become more and more important in The Imperium and even Ares cannot avoid getting his hands dirty.

Powers

The natural power that flows through many of the Alban species is unnatural strength that allows them to lift many times their own body weight as though it were feather-light. This is a kind of power that exists within the muscles of an Alban and takes effect regardless of the size of the Alban in particular, though it is known that the females are somewhat weaker than the males. It is also a hereditary power that is increased through in-breeding, as with the royal family. As Ares is a cousin to the current king, Drosten, he is one of those with very strong capabilities.

Early Life

Birth & Marriage

Born as cousin to the future king of Albany, Crius Ares was brought up and trained in the art of warfare and expected to fulfil the role as 'protector of the realm'; a general in Drosten's army. Although born so close to one another, the two rarely met as children as they were both forced to focus on their own studies. Ares was given a wife at a very young age, one of the youngest ages known in Alban history, she being several years his elder. Caoimhe was a proud woman of high aspirations. She quickly sort to dominate her young husband through guile, stoking his ego and disguising her own ambitions. Whilst Ares was always blunt and raw with his actions, Caoimhe worked politically to get her husband more power within the Kingdom of Albany until he was eventually promised as heir to the throne until Drosten bore male stock.

Plots

Now a young man of great prominence, Ares was a general in the army and heir to the throne. His wife continued her plotting and scheming amongst the inner political circles pushing further and further for power and wealth. Through her actions Ares was soon the most powerful man in Albany, owning great acres of land, piles of gold and many employees. Ares even controlled most of the northern territory where the Logresian people lived under the rule of their southern neighbours. It was the beginning of centralisation for the Albany people. Had this trend continued on, Ares may have become so powerful that the crown would be overthrown and handed to Ares on a platter.

It was at this time that Drosten and Ares truly met, Drosten wishing to know his 'rival'. They would meet regularly, play sports and watch entertainment together. Ares had bore several daughters by Caoimhe, as Drosten had bore several daughters with his own wife Queen Ronat, and they would joke about having to marry them off to one another. This kinship and bond grew and grew as Drosten recognised the simple values of Ares, determining that it was Caoimhe that was the political backbone of the affair. Slowly but surely Drosten began to phase Caoimhe out of political events and proceedings, attempting to limit her influence over the land of Albany. Ares was caught in the middle. Caoimhe might have suggested rebellion had greater matters not intervened.

Invasion of Albany

Attack

The sudden attack on Albany came suddenly. Squic soldiers descended onto the planet from space shuttles, streaming through the built-up regions of the Kingdom of Albany and Logres. Ares led the first attempt at a defensive line, rustling together a quick response unit and blocking an attack made by Jacques, a military general for the invaders. Although fierce, Ares lost the battle, ultimately gaining only time for Drosten's own army to form up and prepare for the final assault. The Imperium was being led by Jacques himself, with the likes of Brittannia and Raylan Loktorus Lammens as support. Whilst the main bulk of the army went head-to-head with Drosten's troops, a smaller unit led by a man simply known as The Hunter travelled north through Logres where the home of Ares was situated. Many Logresian people were killed during the raid and most of Ares' family was killed, including his intelligent wife Caoimhe. Only two of Ares' daughters survived, Caoilainn and Clodagh.

Fall

The attack on Drosten eventually succeeded and, seeing the extermination of his people on the horizon, Drosten surrendered to The Imperium offering himself as a vassal of the dominion. The Imperium accepted the term but also amended that they would take several others to conscript into service. One of these was Ares. Also, unknown to Ares, his daughter Clodagh was conscripted into service. All three were soon wrapped up on the wars of The Imperium.

The Imperium

Promotion

Crius Ares served The Imperium well. Whilst he was distraught by the loss of his family, Ares was a military man and took solace in his good works. He also believed that he would be able to seek his vengeance upon the man named The Hunter if they met somewhere in The Imperium. Ares began his service at the bottom of the ladder but quickly rose as his victories grew and grew. It was only when he drew the attention of Skrai, however, that Ares was given higher ranks and his career was closely followed. Ares belief in simplicity was admired by Skrai, who appreciated the clear-cut approach of someone in his service. Ares knowledge of military tactics grew and grew too, as did his knowledge of technology and space travel. Ares proved himself an able commander of space craft and tactic involved with space to a point where Skrai promoted him to 'Admiral', the second highest rank of all.

Service

As Admiral, Ares displayed some of his greatest militaristic feats, conquering several planets and defeating enemy fleets where many commanders would have failed. However it all came to a head when he was given command of the Dream Space Station after its conquest by Brittannia. Ares kept those imprisoned by Brittannia rather than killing them, something he was regularly prone to do. He believed people always had more worth, one way or the other, when alive and not dead. He expected he would barter them with their homeworlds, or at least use their deaths as incentive to any rebellions in their name. However one of those that escaped the original Imperium attack, Quilan Hyperon, had engaged in secret communications through the station and set up a rebellion on the station itself, whilst she attacked the fleet guarding the station with her own banded 'rebel fleet'.

Author Notes

The idea of Ares had been around for a long time but nothing solid in matter. Even when named and linked to the storylines of several other characters, Ares remained little more than an idea and a name. Upon final creation I have found that I will likely use the character even more than I had originally intended to, expanding his influence from one story arc within The Imperium to a running character in many.
