The planet Earth from which the characters Father Phemus Reginald Smite and his grandfather Reginald Smite originate is one that has been over-run by Hellspawn. In this fantasy version of Earth, the Catholic Church has become the centre-piece of human civilisation and attempts to hold back the swarms of evil creatures through the powers bestowed upon them by God.

Geography
Continents
This fantasy Earth is identical to our real Earth in terms of its physical make-up. It is divided into the continents of Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia (though it may be more accurate to classify North and South America as one American continent, as well as Europe and Asia as Euraisa). No single continent has escaped the 'infection' of Hell, however, and peoples of the entire globe are at risk.
Flora & Fauna
Although pockets of natural life still exist upon Earth, much of it has been wiped out by the demonic creatures of Hell, replacing it with their own twisted lifeforms. What remains of the human race still attempt to preserve as much life as they can by cultivating life centres within their remaining cities. Despite these efforts, most varieties of life have become extinct. Only a few natural species of Earth have adapted to the new surroundings, mostly the opportunistic creatures such as rats, lice and certain species of bird.
The Metaphysical Realms
The metaphysical realms of Heaven and Hell are extensions of this Earth. These two realms are not separate or to be considered worlds in their own right. They are two further continents accessed through means non-physical.
Heaven is ruled by God, a being of supreme omnipotence and one of the most wide-spread supreme entities in the entire Multiverse. It is unclear whether this is one singular being across the entire Multiverse or several beings with the same guise. Hell, on the other hand, is ruled by a council of Fallen Angels with Satan at its head. Satan is often simply known as 'The Adversary' or 'The Devil' and embodied all that is sinful. Hell is the physical representation and accumulation of all mankind's sin.
Sentients
Humans
- See also: Human
The humans of Earth have been pushed to the point of extinction. They have had to bunch up into pockets of protection in an attempt to continue living through the chaos that rages across the planet. Mostly they are governed and controlled by The Catholic Church as it is one of the most able organisations to protect humans from the Hellspawn and many have turned to the Bible and God for guidance. Many priests trained in the ways of the holy light and blessings have gained neigh-magickal abilities, though mostly these only work against demonic or dark creatures.
Hellspawn
These are creatures that originate from the metaphysical realm of Hell. More commonly they are called 'demons'. These demonic creatures are largely without rational understanding or reasoning. They live in and for sin. They are incapable of pure emotions.
Some Hellspawn are monstrous creatures, whilst others can resemble human beings or other such species of Earth. The Hellspawn are born of human sin and are controlled by the fallen angels that govern Hell, in particular the being known as Satan.
Angels
Angels are human-like beings that descend from Heaven. In truth they are ethereal beings but they take corporeal form when interacting with their human charges. These angels are ruled by God, who reigns from Heaven and embodies all that is good and pure. Angels, unlike Hellspawn, are not of human creation but the divine. They are capable of their own thoughts and decisions, though they are enraptured with their lord and so rebellion has occurred just once, creating the council of Hell known as the Fallen Angels.
Politics
Countries
North America
North America is one of the few countries that can still call itself such. Several cities across its great mass are still active and manage to fend off the swarms of Hellspawn that regularly try to conquer and destroy them. Unfortunately as each one falls, the rest are weakened. Many have begun to flock to one single city on the continent; New York.
Each city of North America is responsible for itself and its own protection, whilst using New York as a go-between for news and supplies. Each city is run by an elected Mayor. No President now exists.
Germany
Of all the main-land European countries, only Germany remains, now a significant bastion of human existence as people from the whole of the Eurasian continent arrive at its borders. Germany has some of the most well defended cities on the whole of the planet, as well as some of the most holy of remaining human beings.
Germany is run by the Holy Empire, a hearkening back to the Holy Roman Empire that once existed in this land. It is ruled by Catholic orders with the Pope at its head. The Pope is often also known as the Holy Emperor, though this is an unofficial title. The Pope rules for life.
Great Britain
As with most of the well-developed island nations, Great Britain is one of the most unspoilt locations on the planet. However, in an effort to survive, it has become closed off to the rest of the world and actively attacks anything trying to mount its shores, including other human beings. Through this xenophobia, Great Britain has been responsible of the deaths of many Europeans that were simply seeking sanctuary.
Britain is ruled by its monarch, who was restored to full power over the people when fear and panic spread under an incompetent Prime Minister. The monarch has ultimate power but also maximum responsibility. They rule for life.
Japan
The only 'Eastern' country to remain due to its island nature, much like Great Britain of the west. Like Britain, Japan has become closed off with strict regulations. This procedure came about only after many refugees were already accepted, however, saving many Chinese, Russians and Australians from the ravaging hordes of Hellspawn.
Japan is ruled by its Emperor, who was restored to power in an attempt to generate moral. The Emperor rules for life, though on his death bed he is killed as a kind of sacrifice to God; an attempt to display their loyalty and bring them further years of peace.
Major Cities
New York
The largest city remaining on the planet, New York is known as a resilient and safe city. It is the unofficial capital of North America and looks set to be the last remaining city on the continent. It is ruled by a Mayor, who is elected every year. These procedure has brought some stability to the community and is reminiscent of the days past. New York also has the last remaining advanced technology of the world, including the ability to create portals, through which Father Phemus Reginald Smite was sent.
Hanover
Although Germany has several standing cities that could claim dominance, Honover is the most powerful due to the presence of the country's leader; the Pope. It also has the greatest mix of world-wide cultures. It is surrounded by huge metallic walls, fashioned in a similar way to old medieval castles.
London
Buckingham Palace is the major governmental building in London, from where the monarch reigns. It is also here that 'all roads lead'. A massive transit system of underground trains had been set up to get military units all over the country with maximum possible speed. All of these lines connect with London, which is also where the main military bases and headquarters remain.
Kyoto
In an attempt to raise national pride and moral, Tokyo was renamed as Kyoto. Kyoto was the old capital of Japan before it was moved to Tokyo and conjures much in the way of historical heritage. This new Kyoto is where the Emperor resides and most of the populace flock to, though Japan still has much in the way of advanced cityscape.
Manufactured Landmarks
The Holy Canon
The most formidable weapon against the forces of Hell is located on the border of New York and is the main reason why the city still stands. Charged up by the hands of Catholic priests each day, the canon fires holy blessing light up into the sky, which then falls down in a shower of raining light. This light dissolves all Hellspawn but leaves everything else in tact. The canon itself is huge and may be considered a skyscraper in itself.

Player Notes
I always loved the idea of New York being one of the last bastions of holy influence and human existence, fighting back the hordes of Hell. It has a kind of Warhammer 40k feel to it; a strange perverse version of spiritualism.
