Leonardo 'Leo' Iarodan is a 900-year-old vampire who teaches Summonings and Necromancy at the Schola Borealis. He is arrogant and quite vain, having a particular awareness of his straight hair. Leo is a notorious womanizer on his homeworld, and several other places he has visited on his travels, but he has toned his behaviour down since becoming a teacher. He has a dislike of the headmaster of the Schola Borealis, Lysander. Leo's arrogance refuses to accept that anything can harm him, hence his antipathy towards the light elemental, which could do him some serious damage.

Main Article: Vampire

Vampires are a common creature throughout the multiverse, although they exist in many different forms. The one defining characteristic of a vampire is that they subsist by draining the life force of others, whether this be through blood, magic, or simply heat from the body of their victim. Vampires are usually 'made' from other species by bringing a specimen to the point of death, then restoring them using the method that the vampire uses to feed. In Human folklore, this is by exchange of vampire blood.

Characteristics

Personality

Leo is mainly pretending to put on a menacing vampire act, but as he's been doing it for nine centuries it's unclear where the boundary between act and genuine feeling is. He certainly has an unhealthy fascination with blood and members of the female gender, but he is a good teacher, and tries very hard to feel nurturing feelings towards his students rather than sexual ones. He is afraid of Lysander, but shows this by an open hostility, rather than cowering in a corner.

Powers

Leo has no innate magical powers, other than those granted by his vampire blood. He is superhumanly fast, with amazing reflexes and super-sharp senses. He can use a sort of hypnosis on young, impressionable men and women, but he has been forbidden from doing this by Lysander. He has one overtly magical trick, taught to him by Kai as an ironic gesture- he can shoot illusory bats from beneath his coat or cape.

Story Line

Early Life

Leo was born in a small farming village somewhere in Eastern Europe (he doesn't remember where) to Josef and Suzanne Estara. As soon as he was born, his mother became seriously ill, and when Leo was three, she finally succumbed to her illness and died. The village blamed Leo, thinking him to be some sort of devil child that had laid a curse on his mother. An angry mob came to his house and set it alight, with Josef and Leo inside it. A bandit who had broken into their house offered to save the small child, promising Josef that his son would never suffer the fate of him and his wife. This bandit was Kai.

Fifteen years later, Kai made Leo into a vampire on his eighteenth birthday, having already coaxed the mortal boy into falling in love with him. As vampires and equals, they were free to be lovers, and travelled the world together.

Vampirehood

A few centuries later, Leo made a young gypsy boy into his vampire fledgeling, but mere months afterwards, the boy was burnt as a witch. Leo would have died also, if Kai had not kept his pledge to Josef and rescued Leo before he could give into his suicidal tendencies. Leo still has recurring bouts of depression over the death of his fledgeling.

To distract Leo, Kai entered the pair of them into a tournament running several worlds away. Thinking they would win easily with their vampiric powers, it came as a nasty shock to the pair to find that the tournament was filled with immortal and godlike beings, all with vastly different and in some cases immensely superior to their own. In combat with a fire-child, Kai was seriously injured, and his own maker, Andreas spirited him away to an unknown location, leaving Leo alone.

Travel

Leo searched for Kai for almost a century, passing through many different worlds under cover of darkness. To eliminate the risk of his quest being found out by Andreas, he took up the surname 'Tenebrae', as an unsubtle nod to his vampire nature. As a diversion along his journey, he took up with a number of women, on a number of different worlds. He would always set 'his girls' up with suitable marriages when it came time for him to move on, and he made a point of never revisiting the same place twice.

On a world not far from the Schola Borealis, he found Kai, and 'rescued' him from Andreas' clutches. Unfortunately, Kai had been enjoying a steady recovery in his maker's care, without having a helpless fledgeling to worry about, and was none too happy about being taken away from such unwavering devotion. As soon as he was able to use his magic again, he left Leo without a goodbye, and went to rendezvous with Andreas again.

The Schola Borealis

Devastated at losing his lover twice, Leo sought solace in women and blood again, often simultaneously. He ended up following a particularly recalcitrant teenage girl all the way to the Schola Borealis, where she claimed the sanctuary of its walls. Leo quickly found himself in Lysander's office. He was offered a job as a teacher of the unpopular subject Summonings and Necromancy, on the condition that any breach of Lysander's terms would force the light elemental to use his powers on the vampire as punishment. Leo agreed, but has resented Lysander ever since.

Main article: Lysander

Lysander is a Light Elemental and the Headmaster for the Schola Borealis. He is aloof, mild-mannered and of a generally pleasant demeanour that developed through age and experience. He is now several thousands years old and takes comfort in simple affairs. He runs the Schola Borealis more as a 'hobby' than a 'job'. He is from the planet Lux, however he has been absent from it for many centuries. He has managed to find friendship in Killian Hughes and Alkondoion due to their incredible ages, much like his own, sure in the knowledge that they will live just as long as himself.
