Mikken is the Chief Diplomat of the demonic Shadows, subordinate only to Queen Tarja. He is the best assassin in the realm, and has taken a personal interest in the tutelage of Ellechim Epia since she was a child. He is the only person, aside from Tarja, who can order Ellechim about with any visible results.

Demons such as Ellechim Epia are a sentient species which have populated the world of Hell. They have different attributes depending upon their caste, which is chosen for them, not genetically determined.

Homeworld

Hell

Main article: Hell (Ellechim)

The world of Hell from which Ellechim Epia originates is a dimensional anomaly which is inhabited by several varying breeds of demons. It is not a planet, in the traditional sense, but it has solid ground and a form of atmosphere, making it capable of supporting life.

Characteristics

Personality

Mikken is utterly inscrutable. Nobody knows precisely what his motives are for anything he does, particularly helping Ellechim through the academy. He appears to treat her as something between a daughter and a niece, showing favouritism and helping her through problems. Some have speculated that this is a diversion for his enemies, and the real object of his cares is someone else. However, another school of thought sees this as a double bluff. It is hard to tell with Shadow demons.

Appearance

Mikken is seven and a half feet tall, with good bone structure and handsome, if sharp, features. He is well-muscled, and there isn't a spare ounce of fat on him. He has a tail that is almost as long as his body. His skin is a middling shade of blue, and his hair is bright blue-white, and worn long. He has to wear courtly robes due to his position, but he is most comfortable in simple tunics.

History

Mikken was born several hundred years ago to a Thief father and a Shadow mother. He rose in the hierarchy of demons through his own hard work and three well-timed assassinations. As his position demanded, he would vet the years' graduates of the academy, before they were allowed to pass. Having read the reports very carefully, he decided to fail three of the students which the teachers found no problems with. Reports vary as to the possible reason, but the fact was he didn't give one. The three students are now members of his personal retinue, because they worked twice as hard to pass their final year a second time.

Mikken occasionally interfered with the politics of the academy over the years, but grew bored with it in time. Another of the duties he was expected to perform was the selection of demons to join the Shadow caste. He'd been completing the selection each year, without really taking an interest, but this year he took a real interest, and picked several students that would normally have been rejected out of hand. One of these was Ellechim. The official line was that her parents had done some great service for Queen Tarja in the past, but it was really Mikken's whim that kept her from going back down amongst the Thieves.

He made Ellechim into something of a personal project, and followed her path through the academy with interest. He never visited her, but read her reports avidly and would occasionally send notes to her teachers detailing the best ways to deal with her. He watched her blossom, but there was always the effect of her personality holding her back from being truly successful. Just before she graduated, he visited her, and they had only a brief conversation before he left. The day after, she graduated on his recommendation, despite the misgivings of her teachers. When she moved in with Tari and Espah, and began to calm down, he would visit them regularly, to check on her continuing progress. Ellechim looked upon him as a minor nuisance, and couldn't quite fathom why her friends watched in awe as she spoke to him like an equal.

After Espah's suicide, Mikken was the first person in Ellechim's villa after the messenger. Using he powers that, as her superior, he possessed, he ordered her in careful terms that she was not to take her own life nor ask anyone else to take it for her. She cursed him, and threw things after him as he left, but the order was binding. When she left the Circle on her many jaunts, he sent a discreet spy after her, to send reports of her actions.

It was during this time he began to forge the twin blades that Ellechim carries to this day. Having researched all the requisite magic, and consulted the Priests and Thief craftsmen, he fired up the forge and began the ritual. It took days to gather together the power to bind the two spirits to the blades, and there was great risk to Mikken's life, for if he slept, or collapsed through exhaustion, the spell would turn on him and consume him. Fortunately, the spirits came gladly to inhabit the swords, and they were soon completed. Upon Ellechim's next visit home, when she arrived determined to die in her bed, he presented them to her, and they lifted her spirit right from the brink of death.

Beloved as Ellechim obviously was to him, Mikken could not keep letting her misbehaviour slide. In the Shadow palace, during negotiations, she would run through the corridors, banging things on the wall. Sometimes she would wander into the council chamber in nothing but a scandalously short tunic, or she'd walk in eating and stare at the diplomats. And so, Mikken has been forced to send her to the Schola, where he hopes she will learn humility and manners from Mistress Procellifer. From what he's heard, there is little hope of that.
