The Multiverse is the hyper-fictionalised mechanics of our Role-Play forum. It is the explanation for the presence of beings from strange worlds with opposing theories of physics and existence. All players have crossed through the Multiverse from their own worlds to land in the Valle Dei Mondi and attend the Schola Draíochta. The Valley, as the Valle Dei Mondi is commonly known, is a prime spot for portals, which converge on a location known as the Portal Grounds. It is this land that makes the Schola a perfect spot for an inter-dimensional magick school. It is also why the warlord Skrai caused the Second Invasion event. The Multiverse theory would also suggest that all forums exist alongside one another and, provided permission is granted or the nature of the other forum involves the Multiverse theory, then links can be made between them and ours, including the likes of Tairachi and The Napping Cat's Dream.

Theory

What is it?

The theory of the 'Multiverse' is a common one. The idea is that there is not just one single universe, but an infinite number and that they are being created all of the time. There are many theories concerning the matter but no empirical proof as of yet. The most likely theory that makes the most sense is that every possibility of our own universe is a separate universe. If a die is thrown, then six alternate realities are created, each one depicting a different result of the thrown die. Of course you could have a seventh unlikely universe where the die lands on its tip. And, you might argue, if the universe's are truly infinite with all possibilities then the die begins to float, grows legs and eats a lump of cheddar cheese; which is where it falls down. It cannot be truly infinite if it is bound by the same laws as our own universe and if you say the previous scenario is possible then there must also be a universe where said die skips into our universe and every universe at once and be seen by everyone. Instead, it may be more practical to believe that there is simply a very large number of possible realities that are constantly being created for all time. This is not the same as infinite, a machine that never stops is not infinitely processing, it just doesn't stop. There are some that would also argue that fictional characters created by authors must also exist within a Multiverse theory and their universe truly occurs somewhere out there.

Fiction

Within the context of the Schola we used a hyper-fictionalised version of the Multiverse. It is, indeed, the idea that all kinds of weird creatures and mythology beasts do live in one of the many universes that exist out there; as well as all time periods of said worlds. True or not, the Multiverse theory is the mechanics of our fictionalised Role-Playing forum.

Travelling the Multiverse

The key access point for the Schola Draíochta is the Portal Grounds, a location where portals tend to thrive. These portals have since been revealed to be created by Bugs, which flock to the Valle Dei Mondi due to the magickal nature of the zone and the existence of so much inter-dimensional traffic.

Characters can travel through many universes before arriving at the Schola, or may arrive by mistake and others still attend deliberating; opening a portal themselves either by soft magick or forcing one open via ripping or tearing the boundary between worlds.

Some characters are more heavily involved with the Multiverse theory than others. Reimi Soulstar plans to utilise the Multiverse to find his homeworld of Tairachi, whilst Killian Hughes and Garrick Keigwin, two Juncturists, travel the Multiverse as a natural means to spend their time.

The Ethereal being known as Skrai is from a world formed solely by the principle of the Multiverse, consuming beings from all across it to continue its own existence. Ultimately, however, The Napping Cat's Dream couldn't sustain itself and fell into a slow decline before it finally faded out of existence. Skrai, however, now expands his influence across the Multiverse, conquering cities, planets, even entire galaxies that would serve his purpose. Skrai, above all, is highly tied to the Multiverse theory.

Time-Lines

One of the most confusing issues of the Multiverse is when time-lines are introduced, considered as being separate universes all of their own. By this characters may travel to another universe and meet themselves from another time period, from their childhood to adulthood to five minutes ago. This, of course, holds strange implications on what happens to your character and whether they remember meeting themselves or if by meeting they simply create an alternate universe.

At least three characters are in a time flux. Valentine Fellin and Genichi Kasuse were both present in The Napping Cat's Dream as adults and now exist aboard the Dream Space Station as prisoners of Admiral Crius Ares. However their younger adolescent selves, Valentine Fellin and Genichi Kasuse, also exist as students at the Schola Draíochta. The possibility that they might meet due to the Multiverse theory could occur. Another character, Aire, likewise is in danger of meeting her future incarnation Airetasare, who, like Valentine and Genichi, was an adult during her time within The Napping Cat's Dream. Aire, however, is from a plane of existence where time does not exist and therefore she should already know everything that comes before and after in her never-ending existence. This is a confusing concept and therefore is not used, however the implication and theory is there.

Non-Schola Examples

The idea of a Multiverse isn't an uncommon one. The One is a film that uses the Multiverse at its core, though it uses the more 'realistic' variety of the theory, confining itself to varying time-lines of the same universe. Another very popular cultural icon to use the Multiverse theory is The Magician's Nephew, the first book in the Narnia series. Though the book never expresses a Multiverse directly, the 'Wood between Worlds' with pools that lead to other magickal universes is exactly the same theory with a more magickal twist. The Wood between Worlds may be comparable to our own Portal Grounds. Other examples include The Keys to the Kingdom Series and His Dark Materials Omnibus. The Discworld Series often makes references to the Multiverse and the existence of other worlds and universes beyond the one that the Discworld inhabits, emphasising that each has its very own set of physics.

Player Notes

The idea of the 'Multiverse' is a kind of 'get-out-clause' to explain where all these weird people come from. Of course it can be a very confusing subject as it not only encompasses multiple universes but time-lines too. The mind boggles.
