Species

See also: Human
Main article: Cascadia

Humans are the most common beings on the planet, though this is due to their higher reproduction rates, which, in turn, is due to having a lower life-span that the other sentients of Cascadia. They derive from the continent Irania but have expanded onto Caekan and even onto an island off of Un'oth Iridia. As with humans from other corners of the Multiverse, the humans of Cascadia have no latent supernatural talents. They are very adept at transferring the magickal properties of their world into physical objects, however, such as rings or amulets or even weapons. Although the humans of Cascadia consider themselves as one race, they generally vary from dark to light skin and posses hair from light to dark.

Homeworld

Main article: Cascadia

Cascadia was the homeworld of Raylan Loktorus Lammens before he travelled into The Napping Cat's Dream, chasing the bandits that destroyed his home city of Rhiminée. The land is a traditional realm of 'fantasy', featuring sentient humans, elves and dwarves. Being split by so many species and factions, the land of Cascadia is rarely at peace, making warfare a common way of life. The world has only just begun to investigate the uses of gunpowder, utilising it in the form of hand canons.

Characteristics

Personality

Once proud and honourable, Raylan became twisted by his curse and cared little for his own existence or the existence of any that sided with Skrai. He constantly threw himself into battles that he didn't think he could win, only to emerge victorious and more depressed. He hated himself and longed for death until it eventually arrived and ended his despair.

Powers

Originally Raylan had no powers, however the curse upon him gave him a strange power that allowed him to control and create tendrils. Rather than emerge from him directly, the tendrils appeared around him as though created by his mind and nothing physical. How Skrai granted this power is still unknown, though it is possible that the power was always latent in Raylan's mind and Skrai simply unlocked it. If this is the case there is a fair chance that others on Cascadia have this same ability locked deep within their minds.

Story Line

Place of Birth

Rhiminée

Main article: Cascadia

Once a large city of southern Ferenz, Rhiminée was attacked by unknown assailants and destroyed. In the aftermath, some people have returned to the city to rebuild, though efforts are slow and difficult. It is believed by the people that the former lord of Rhiminée, Raylan Loktorus Lammens, died when he went to track down the attackers.

Early Life

Childhood

Raylan lived the high-born life of servants, luxury and wealth. He never needed to want for anything and was brought up to regard all as his subjects, save the monarchy that lived many miles away in the city of Lianée. His own city of Rhiminée was one of the most prosperous in the Irania Provinces, which made the Lammens family incredibly influential and important to Ferenz. He was made Lord at an early age when his father died from Erysipelas, an acute bacterial infection of the skin, which his mother acting as regent until he reached fourteen.

Teenage Years

As Lord of Rhiminée, Raylan was seen as honourable and gracious, if spoilt. The people were proud to be ruled by a brave, young lord and when word of bandits spread Raylan was asked to deal with the situation. Vowing to lead a charge of knights out personally, he followed the leads that took him into the forest close to the city. However the whole affair was a large deception to weaken the defence of the city.

Raylan returned to find the city in ruins, burnt and pillaged. He allowed his knights to turn their service to the monarchy of Ferenz and took to his own personal quest to track down the mysterious band that had took his whole life and killed his family. He believed he was tracking brigands until he found them and watched them use a portal to leave the world of Cascadia behind. Raylan, still determined to seek vengeance, followed them through. He found himself in a strange world known as The Napping Cat's Dream, which seemed to be a world that connected many hundreds more worlds from across the Multiverse.

The Dream & Skrai

Meeting Pine

Raylan soon met the aqua mage Pine, who was a young man from a version of Earth that had been granted powers over aqua when he entered The Napping Cat's Dream. They became firm friends and travelled much together, Raylan searching for the brigands and Pine for knowledge of his powers. However this friendship bloomed into love during one long night of close bonding. Pine confessed that he had only been travelling with Raylan because he could spend time with Raylan himself and not for his quest for knowledge. Following this, the pair continued to travel together as lovers, not just friends.

Pursuit of Skrai

They spent a great deal of time exploring the Dream world, meeting new people from across the Multiverse and seeking information on those that attacked Rhiminée. It wasn't until they heard tale of the warlord Skrai that leads began to match up and head towards him. Raylan formed a group of heroes from the Dream to locate and destroy Skrai, who plagued more than just Raylan and his homeland, but also many people from across the Dream and the Multiverse. The group eventually located the Neko Island Fortress, which was supposed to be Skrai's new base of operations.

To shoo the heroes and keep his base a secret, Skrai created two new beings; Domie Neitrycks and Emperor. The duo attacked the heroes and led them through a portal into a pocket dimension. After chasing Emperor through the pocket dimension, the group found themselves in a deserted church; the Church of Dreams, which had once belonged to Father Phemus Reginald Smite but in his absence had been taken over by Skrai.

Emperor had set up the trap and led the heroes through yet another portal, however Raylan became stranded and was eventually caught by Skrai himself. Skrai, seeing the fire that burnt within Raylan, decided to try and twist Raylan's mind to his will. It succeeded. Raylan, although reluctant and out-spokenly so, obeyed Skrai's every command.

The Curse of Raylan

War Campaigns

Forced to follow Skrai, Raylan was appointed as an officer in Skrai's army and took part in many engagements throughout the Multiverse. Raylan's was the sole unit to take over the Celestial Temple and he took part in the attack on the Kingdom of Albany where King Drosten ruled. Raylan had become one of those that he had hated for so long, a member of Skrai's conquering army. He had been fighting against such people for so long only to wind up one of them. He never again saw Pine, being forced on campaigns away from the Dream. However Raylan thought this a good thing as he believed Skrai would have no qualms at ordering him to kill his former lover.

The Second Invasion

Skrai eventually made designs on the Valle Dei Mondi due to the presence of the Portal Grounds, which would prove a useful staging point for Skrai's army. Skrai posed as a teacher at the school known as Schola Draíochta before betraying them when he learnt all he could of their defences. Raylan was one of the many officers sent to attack the town of Breja. He travelled into battle along with Skrai himself, prepared to act as a shield between Skrai and out-be attackers, however they soon came up against a powerful being known as Glacier, who was a Lost One from within the teacher Akaras. Skrai faced Glacier alone until he finally brought down a building onto the creature using one of his Five Ring Set. He charged Raylan with unearthing the remains for inspection and left to battle a portal-wielding boy named Gebohq. It was then that Raylan discovered Glacier was very much alive. Even firing a powerful blast of light at the beast didn't stop Glacier charging at Raylan and he finally knew that his life of evil would finally end. Moments before his death, however, Raylan left his link to Skrai snap as the Overlord was killed in a blast caused within the main camp about the Portal Grounds and the Dream Gate. Despite this, Raylan made no move to live and allowed himself to be cut down as justice for all his crimes, intentional or not.

Player Notes

Raylan was originally a character on The Napping Cat's Dream, however he moved along with Skrai to the Schola. Raylan was a well-developed character with plenty of history and was well-known amongst many other Dream characters long before I advanced his storyline and made him a servant of Skrai. It was interesting to play the shift from hero to 'emo' villain and I will miss him greatly, however there is little room to continue playing him after Skrai's fall.
